El muralismo mexicano nació de la revolución de 1910 y tanto extendió su influencia que hoy es considerado uno de los géneros más representativos de Latinoamérica. David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera y José Clemente Orozco fueron los artistas más renombrados. Una de los puntos más importantes del muralismo mexicano es la voluntad de crear un arte diferenciado de Europa. Una época donde la mayoría de los artistas se formaban en esas latitudes, hay una intención explícita de buscar la esencia mexicana. ¿En dónde? en la estética y cultura indígenas, y los temas nacionales. Los muralistas representaban escenas trascendentales de la historia de México en sitios públicos como plazas, avenidas, calles y edificios. “El mercado de Tlatelolco” de Diego Rivera es un claro ejemplo de esto. La obra busca mostrar los sentimientos de identidad y pertenencia nacional.
Muralismo, política y sociedad
Otra de las claves del muralismo mexicano es su fuerte implicación política y social. La Revolución Mexicana termina con la dictadura de Porfirio Díaz y da comienzo a este movimiento que trae consigo una fuerte crítica política, social y económica. Influidos por las ideas marxistas, para los muralistas el arte era un reflejo de la sociedad y debía ser expresión del compromiso con la causa de las clases oprimidas (obreros y campesinos). Así, el arte se convertía en un instrumento al servicio de los ideales de revolución y reivindicación social.
Esta idea del arte comprometido se relaciona directamente con la elección del soporte mural. Cuando en 1921 José Vasconcelos fue nombrado secretario de Educación Pública, puso a disposición de los artistas los espacios de edificios públicos. José Clemente Orozco y David Alfaro Siqueiros fueron los primeros en plasmar su arte en el “único soporte artístico realmente democrático”: el muro. En edificios del Estado, escuelas, universidades o iglesias, buscaban crear un arte para el pueblo.
El muralismo mexicano se ha convertido en fuente de inspiración y modelo artístico a nivel internacional, y continúa teniendo una gran vigencia. Desde los emblemáticos murales de Rivera en la Secretaría de Educación Pública Nacional hasta los del Instituto de Artes de Detroit en Estados Unidos, las obras forman parte del patrimonio público. Aquellas que están en espacios abiertos o en escuelas o universidades siguen al alcance del público. El muralismo mexicano deja un legado invaluable.
